Update on the Political Situation in Thailand
September 15, 2008 – 11:17 am
Thailand’s acting Prime Minister lifted a state of emergency in Bangkok on Sunday, 12 days after it was inforced in response to clashes between pro- and anti-government groups in Bangkok. Tensions in Bangkok have fallen and most people have returned to daily life.
The ruling coalition has not yet decided on who should replace Samak Sundaravej who was forced by Thailand’s Constitutional Court to resign as Prime Minister last week. Parliament is to vote for a new Prime Minister on Wednesday.
The political tensions in Thailand have done little to change daily life. The area around the Independence Monument in Bangkok is still really the only area whee protesters can be seen. Outside Bangkok life remains the safe for most locals. Tourist’s have report no changes or delays to transport systems or flights. All airports are open and working as usual.
