The Komodo Expedition is a seven-night adventure through the pristine wilderness and waters of Indonesia’s Komodo National Park. The experience starts or ends with a two-night stay at Amanwana, a luxury tented wilderness hideaway on Moyo Island.
Encounter antediluvian creatures unchanged since prehistoric times on a visit to the only two islands in the world where the infamous Komodo dragon can still be found. Cruise through the Nusa Tenggara island chain to dive and snorkel some of the world’s most biologically diverse and widely acclaimed underwater sites. This expedition truly unveils a forgotten Eden, on land and sea.
The Komodo National Park is a World Heritage Site in which you will be escorted by park rangers to view Komodo dragons in their natural habitat. Other wildlife on Rinca and Komodo Islands includes buffalo, deer, monkeys and wild horses. From the colourful reefs of Tatawa Island to the seductive setting and colours of Komodo’s Pink Beach.
Amanwana (which means "peaceful forest" and opened in 1993) is a nature camp and wilderness hideaway. Set in a secluded cove on the island's west coast, the camp is surrounded by tropical forest and looks out over Amanwana Bay and beyond to the Flores Sea. Medang Island, in the northwest, the rugged mountains of Sumbawa in the south and Lombok's volcanic Mt Rinjani are all visible from Moyo. The island is the "cork" in a natural bottleneck leading to Saleh Bay, a sheltered inland sea that is ideal for cruising and island hopping.
ACCOMMODATION
Sand paths link the tents to one another and lead to the beach, the dining room and reception. There are two room categories - Ocean-Front Tent and Jungle Tent. The only difference between the two is whether you prefer to be closer to the ocean or the jungle.
The Dining Room and Bar are located in an open-air pavilion facing the sea. Indonesian hardwood flooring and solid coconut pillars support the tropical structure. A selection of Asian and Western food is served at breakfast, lunch and dinner. In season, a regular alfresco barbecue is available as are Campfire dinners.
Library: Amanwana's library specialises in Indonesian art and culture and has a wide range of books on marine life.
Boardwalk: Snorkelling equipment, windsurfers, kayaks and hobie-cats are available from the thatched-roof bale close to the boardwalk. The boardwalk itself is furnished with beach chairs and shade umbrellas. A freshwater dipping pool is set against a wall of coral rock.
Jungle Cove Massage: The Jungle Cove Massage area is just off the beach and under shady tamarind trees. Simple coral-stone walls divide the outdoor centre into three treatment areas, each including a recessed, soaking tub and a shower. Enjoy a massage, a fresh-fruit facial or a Borneo body scrub while watching the clouds gather about distant Mount Rinjani.
Amanikan, a custom-built 32-metre coastal cruiser, features three above-deck cabins, a foredeck with bar for outdoor dining, and extensive dive facilities.
The master cabin is located at the stern of the upper deck and offers sweeping 270 degree views from both inside the cabin’s wraparound windows and a large private sun deck. Features a king-sized bed, en-suite bathroom with double vanities, double wardrobes, shower with separate toilet and air-conditioning.
The second cabin is situated on the main deck and features the same spectacular views as the master cabin from both inside the cabin and from a second private balcony with built-in daybed. Includes a queen-sized bed along with en-suite bathroom with double vanities, double wardrobes, shower with separate toilet and air-conditioning.
