Indonesia Self Drive
Some parts of Indonesia are ok to drive oneself, others perhaps not.
Bali is great location to rent a jeep and trake yourself off exploring. There is always someone who can speak some English, and anyway, mastering the basics in Bahasa Indonesia is not difficult.
Jave is a different story - and also parts of Sumatra. The mountainous roads are narrow and windy, and buses hurtly around blind corners with abandon. Drivers are often paid for each trip they can make, so therefore try to cram more trips into the day than is safe to do so.
Lower population centres, means less traffic and therefore easier driving conditions.
