Southern Leyte
Southern Leyte is an exciting new location for diving and holds many secrets waiting to be discovered. The 2.5km (1.6 mile) coral garden on the west side of Tancaan Point has five world class dives! The beautiful pristine coral gardens, which only get better as you go deeper you go. There are gorgeous drop-offs, walls and lots of aquatic life. The whale sharks are common to the area during the literary dates offered.Seasons & Weather: January - March; Air temperature: 31°C/88°F; Sea temperature: 28°C/82°F; Average visibility: up to 30 meters/ 90ft.
DIVE DAY 1: PADRE BURGOS - The dives comprise of: Max’s Climax 1 and 2 (wall dives); Voltaire’s Rock; Bulawarte and a wreck dive. All these dives have plenty of big fifish action when current is moving. Padre Burgos Pier and Malibog wreck are our two fifirst class night dives. Seahorse, frogfifish, nudibranch, reptilian eel, octopus, razor fish, slipper crabs are only just a few of the creatures you will see while diving at these sites.
DIVE DAY 2: SOGOD BAY NORTH - Some of the dive sites include Bunga Bend, Whip City, Cantamac and Malitbog wreck. These sites have diverse fish and coral life: nudibanches, ribbon eels, pigmy seahorses, ghost pipe fish and mantis shrimp are commonly found.
DIVE DAY 3: LILOAN CHANNEL - On the east side of Sogod Bay is Panoan Island and Napantao dive site. The dive is also a marine sanctuary. Giant gorgonian fans are abundant on the wall. It is spectacular on a sunny day and looks absolutely majestic.
DIVE DAY 4: SOUTHERN POINT OF SOGOD BAY - Tankan and Santa Sofia has a fantastic array of colorful soft corals and huge barrel corals. Mandarin Fish, turtles, eagle rays, batfish and frogfish are frequent visitors to these sites.
DIVE DAY 5: LIMASAWA ISLANDDAY - The famous Limasawa Island is not only famous for Magellan’s visit but also for the incredible diving. Adrian’s Cove and Zack’s Cove dive sites are 20 to 50 meters deep and have dark eerie steep walls with gorgonian fans and massive table corals. We often see nudibranchs and occasionally the odd hammerhead, or white tip reef shark!
DIVE DAY 6: SAN FRANCISCO BAY /SONOK - Sunok has become very popular with whale sharks between early November until May. The whale sharks follow plankton and jellyfish and for that reason we cannot guarantee where they will be all of the time! That said our first season in Souther Lyete reported dozens of encounters through the season. The sanctuary is strictly snorkeling only!
Land excursions:
Between dives on Limasawa Island you can go ashore on the west side at San Bernando and wander around the village or visit the shrine where the first Catholic mass was held in the Philippines when Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese navigator and explorer, landed in 1521. Also visit the location where MacArther did make good on his promise “I shall return” to the Philippines.
