Sabah curfew extended once more

The curfew on the East Coast of Sabah, involving the sea area starting three nautical miles from shore up to the international borders with the Philippines, has yet again been extended to the 21st of October 2014. It will be a 10-hour daily sea curfew from 7pm to 5am. This encompasses an area of some 121,270 sq miles. The length of the curfew area is about 362 nautical miles from Tanjung Pundaras in Sandakan to part of Pulau Sebatik near Tawau.

Kelabit Long Ears vanishing

A Kelabit lady with traditional long ears

Traditionally the women of the Kelabit tribe of northern Borneo would use heavy brass weights to stretch their earlobes, considered to be highly attractive. Sadly this is another tradition that is fast disappearing. I once met a lady who had had her earlobes surgically removed as she considered them no longer fashionable.

AirAsia to start new route to Balikpapan, Indonesia

AirAsia is to launch direct flights to Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, Indonesia, from 12 January 2011. It will offer three flights weekly departing from the LCC Terminal in Kuala Lumpur to Sepinggan Airport, Balikpapan on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

Mostly surrounded by sea, Balikpapan is an important center of the petroleum, mining, and timber industries. There are myriad of attractions in Balikpapan such as the beautiful Melawai and Manggar Segarasari beaches, Bekapai Park, Wanawisata Garden, Agro Tourism Garden, Crocodile Teritip Breeding Farm and shopping centers.

In addition to that, you can also visit neighboring attractions such as the Orang Utan sanctuary at Semboja Lodge, floating market at Banjarmasin, diving at Derawan islands, canoeing while witnessing species of monkeys and caves along Kandilo River and much more.
