Meet Wild Elephants in Laos

The Elephant Conservation Centre (ECC) in Sayaboury, Laos, is a program dedicated to helping protect the endangered Asian elephant, helping to preserve this endangered species. Launched in connection with the NGO ElefantAsia, the ECC is creating an elephant nursery, offering access to veterinary care at a permanent hospital and training mahouts while protecting the existing population of wild elephants.

The centre prides itself on their natural and ecologically aware approach to working with these animals. The elephants inhabit a 106 hectare protected forest set by the Nam Tien Lake where there is sufficient natural food and visitors can watch them in their natural habitat without causing a disturbance to their daily activities.

Facilities at the Elephant Conservation Centre are also ecologically friendly, utilising solar power and water from the lake for filtration. To reduce the use of new building materials, ECC’s infrastructure uses traditional Lao houses that have been relocated to the centre.

A trip to the Elephant Conservation Centre will compliment any visit to Laos, providing the opportunity to see up close and gain a greater understanding of these endangered animals.

New Chiang Khong ~ Houei Xai Bridge opens

The 4th Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge over the Mekong River is to open tomorrow, 12 December, significantly easing travel between northern Thailand and northern Laos.

The new bridge spans the river between Chiang Khong in Chiang Rai province, Thailand, and Houay Xai in Bokeo province, Laos.

For anyone joining a river cruise down the Mekong River to Luang Prabang, such as the Luang Say or the Nagi of Mekong, this should make joining your boat from Thailand significantly quicker and easier. Hooray!

The three other Mekong Friendship Bridges are: Vientiane-Nong Khai, Savannakhet-Mukdahan, and Khammouan-Nakhon Phanom. The construction of the fifth bridge between Bolikhamxai province of Laos and Bung Kan province in Thailand is also in the pipeline, while there is a plan to build a sixth bridge between Saravane province in Laos and Ubon Ratchathani province in Thailand.

Luang Prabang Half Marathon, Laos, Oct 2013

A half-marathon in the UNESCO World Heritage destination of Luang Prabang will take runners on a route inspired by the daily procession of monks who walk through the town at dawn to collect offerings.

Limited to 500 international runners to reduce congestion, the race on October 5 is titled “La Procession”. It will offer participants the opportunity to run around the town’s greatest historical sites. The costs of the event are fully covered by corporate sponsors and, instead of the usual entry fee; runners will make charitable donations directly through online fundraising pages.

Proceeds from the half-marathon will go towards funding Friends International, an NGO benefiting children and young people across South East Asia. The race comprises three race routes: half-marathon, 14-km, and 7-km race for family members. The organisers hope to make the race an annual event so it will become firmly established on the regional half-marathon calendar.

Cambodia pressures Laos to halt work on Xayaburi dam

Cambodia has called for an immediate halt to the construction of the Xayaburi dam in an official protest note to Laos, officials said in a statement last week, as opposition to the hydropower project gained momentum in Thailand.

Psychedelic gecko, “Elvis” monkey in new Mekong finds

A wildly-coloured gecko, a fish that looks like a gherkin, and a monkey with an Elvis-like hairstyle are among the more than 200 new species discovered in the Greater Mekong region last year.

The area’s diversity is so astonishing that a new species is found every two days, but regional cooperation and decision-making must take centre stage to preserve its richness, the group added.
