This pic was taken from the air flying between Sorong in West Papua to Manado on the northern tip of Sulawesi, Indonesia, as we passed over Pulau Waigeo. This is real frontier diving with some of the richest biodiversity counts recorded anywhere!

Next goal would be to kayak around the shoreline to explore the untouched beaches and rainforests. Waigeo is renowned amongst birders for Birds of Paradise.

Join this 11-days expedition to explore Palau’s hidden network of marine lakes, mangrove channels, marine tunnels, tropical beaches, and marine caverns, all in the serenity of nature.

This expedition is designed to be safe and fun, however, it does require an intermediate level of fitness and paddle experience. And…. no!… I did not write this myself! However I am not surprised as that part of the Mekong River from Southern Laos into northern Cambodia is exceptional for anyone looking for a real, off the beaten track adventure. Time has left this part of Indochina behind. The bird life is fantastic, and village life is much as it has been since before the Khmer Rouge destroyed so much of the rest of the country. However development is threatening, with new roads being built between Stung Treng and T’beng Meanchey to the west, and the road from the Laos border to Phnom Penh is already complete. News today talks about rubber plantations encroaching into the biodiversely important Virachey National Park on the Cambodia/Lao border.

As I kayaked down the Mekong river, a couple of humps slunk out of the water about 10 metres ahead. Then a couple more to the left, and more to the right, before I finally realised that I was at the centre of a pod of Irrawaddy river dolphins, one of the rarest species on the planet.

Max took me for a microlight flyover on the last day revealing a vast number of unspoiled islands, lagoons, sand banks, forests, etc. there are only a small number of tiny fishing villages sprinkled around the islands producing minimal impact. From the air we also saw several Dugongs – including one mother with her calf  -pods of dolphins, turtles and more. In some estuaries of Waigeo Island there are crocodiles too!
