October 15, 2010 – 5:50 pm

Indonesia’s national airline, Garuda Indonesia, has been recognized as Asia’s leading service quality airline, according to a recent independent survey of all major airlines across the region.

The survey conducted by the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA), scored Garuda ahead of Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways, Cathay Pacific and Malaysia Airlines for the overall quality of its service.

The survey finding follows Garuda being named the ‘World’s Most Improved Airline’ at the Skytrax 2010 World Airline Awards in Hamburg, Germany, in May.

Cambodia’s Pchum Ben Festival gets under way, Oct 2010

October 1, 2010 – 2:41 pm

SpiritFeeding the Ancestors: The Cambodian Pchum Ben Festival

The fifteenth day, of the tenth month, of the Khmer calendar marks the Pchum Ben festival. This is a time when the spirits of the dead ancestors walk the Earth. And the living can ease their suffering by offering them food to eat.

At four in the morning, nearly all of the residents of Phnom Penh gather at the temple with offerings of rice, which they toss on the ground, feeding the dead ancestors.

“Some of the ghosts have small mouths,” one man explains. “So we have to use special rice.”

Many of the people throw sticky rice, which, apparently is easier for the spirits to consume.

According to Buddhist beliefs, the lives that we live, after death, are predicated by the actions that we took when we were living. Minor infractions would be punished with small punishments, such as being an unattractive ghost or having a small mouth. With a small mouth, it is hard to eat. Other, more severe, punishments could include being crippled or having no mouth at all.

Red Shirt protests in Bangkok & Chiang Mai this weekend

September 17, 2010 – 10:33 pm

This coming weekend, the “red shirt” protestors plan to hold demonstrations in Bangkok and Chiang Mai to mark the 4th anniversary of the 2006 coup from 17-19 September. The events will be held around Ratchaprasong intersection and the Democracy Monument in Bangkok; and the railway station and around the moat area in Chiang Mai.

As a precaution the government will further extend security measures in order to ensure that all protests will remain peaceful as earlier announced.

Most White-Shouldered Ibis Ever Recorded in Cambodia

September 15, 2010 – 11:57 am

White-Shouldered-Ibis_sketchMost White-Shouldered Ibis Ever Recorded in Cambodia A record number of the critically endangered white-shouldered Ibis have been counted in Cambodia, Birdlife International said yesterday. Bou Vorsak, Birdlife’s Cambodia Acting Programme Manager, said 429 of the birds were counted simultaneously at 37 roost sites in five provinces across the country last month. This figure exceeds by 30% the 2010 International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List estimate of just 330 birds left worldwide.

White-Shouldered-Ibis_mapThe ibis population declined steeply in the 20th Century due to habitat loss and hunting. The bird is now non-existent in Thailand, Burma, Vietnam, Malaysia and southern China, according to Birdlife, and it remains primarily in the dry deciduous forests of north east Cambodia.

For more about the White-Shouldered Ibis, check out the Birdlife International website here.
