New Year Travels in Cambodia: Preah Vihear, Phnom Kulen, Beng Mealea

January 3, 2011 – 11:56 pm

I have just returned to Phnom Penh after a great New Year road trip into the wilderness of northern Cambodia.

Our trip took us first to Stung Treng – with a stop in Kratie Province to spot the illusive and endangered Irrawaddy dolphins of Campie – where the Sesan and Srepok Rivers converge to form the Sekong River just before flowing into the Mekong.

From there we braved the rough forest trails across the expanse of wilderness west of the Mekong to T’beng Meancheay and up to the magnificent Preah Vihear Temple, perched on the top of an escarpment on the Thai border.

Travelling south we then visited the holy mountain of Phnom Kulen and the Angkorian period jungle temple of Boeung Mealea (Beng Mealea?).
